WHAT THIS VISA ALLOWS:

Contributory Aged Parent Visa holders can:

  • Live in Australia as a permanent resident
  • Work and study in Australia
  • Enrol in Australia’s public health care scheme, Medicare
  • Sponsor eligible relatives to go to Australia
  • If eligible, apply for Australian citizenship

THE REQUIREMENTS:

To apply for the Contributory Aged Parent Visa, candidates must:

  • Have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • Have an eligible sponsor, which is usually the child as mentioned above
  • Be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia
  • Meet Australia’s balance-of-family test unless the candidate holds a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 884)
  • Meet Australia’s health and character requirements

The Subclass 864 visa is a permanent residency visa, which means it lets visa holders live in Australia indefinitely.

The Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143) and the Contributory Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 864) are both permanent residence visas for the parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens.

The main differences are in the following requirements:

  • Age: Candidates must be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia (66 years and 6 months at the time of writing) to apply for the Subclass 864 Visa. There is no age requirement for the Subclass 143 Visa.
  • Sponsorship: Candidates must have sponsorship to apply for the Subclass 864 Visa. However, applicants for the Subclass 143 Visa will only need sponsorship if they don’t meet the requirements to apply as a retiree.
  • Assurance of support: Subclass 864 Visa applicants must have an assurance of support, but Subclass 143 applicants who qualify to apply as retirees do not. 
  • Balance-of-family test: To apply for a Subclass 864 visa, applicants must meet the balance-of-family test. However, this is not necessary for Subclass 143 applicants who qualify to apply as retirees.

Yes, applicants can include members of their family unit in their application. Partners must be included in applications whether or not they are applying for the visa with the principal applicant.
