The Former Resident Visa (Subclass 151) lets former Australian permanent residents and eligible people who served in the Australian Defence Force live in Australia.

WHAT THIS VISA ALLOWS:

Former Resident Visa (Subclass 151) holders can:

  • Live in Australia as permanent residents
  • Work and study in Australia
  • Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s public health care scheme
  • Sponsor relatives to go to Australia
  • If eligible, apply for Australian citizenship

THE REQUIREMENTS:

To apply for a Former Resident Visa, candidates must:

  • Meet the age and long residence requirement or defence service requirement

MORE ABOUT THE AGE AND LONG RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT:

To apply for a Subclass 151 visa as a former permanent resident, candidates must:

  • Be under the age of 45
  • Have spent at least nine years in Australia as a permanent resident if 18 or older, OR at least half their life if younger than 18
  • Have never been an Australian citizen
  • Have kept close ties - business, cultural or personal - with Australia after no longer being a permanent resident

MORE ABOUT THE DEFENCE SERVICE REQUIREMENT:

To apply for a Subclass 151 visa as someone’s as a former Australian defence force member, candidates must have completed at least three months of continuous Australian defence service.

Service members who were discharged before completing three months of service due to being discharged medically unfit are also eligible to apply for a Former Resident Visa.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Former Resident Visa is a permanent resident visa, meaning it lets visa holders live in Australia indefinitely. 

Former Resident Visa holders can travel to and from Australia for up to 5 years for as long as the travel facility remains valid. 

To continue travelling after the initial five years, the resident must apply for a Resident Return Visa or consider applying for Australian citizenship.

Former Resident Visa applicants can include immediate family members in their application either:

  • At the time of making the application, or
  • At any time before Australia decides on their application
