The Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) enables a parent, custodian or relative of a Student Visa holder to stay in Australia temporarily to care for and support the student.

WHAT THIS VISA ALLOWS:
Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) holders can:
- Travel to and stay in Australia to provide care and support for a Student Visa holder who is under 18 years of age or older than 18 in exceptional circumstances
- Care for more than one student
- Study an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) for less than 20 hours per week, or any other study or training for no more than three months
Student Guardian Visa holders cannot work while in Australia.
THE REQUIREMENTS:
To apply for a Student Guardian Visa, candidates must:
- Be the student’s parent, custodian or relative who is 21 years or older, nominated in writing by a parent or person who has custody of the student
- Have enough money to support themselves and the student during their stay
- Have adequate health insurance for the duration of their stay
- Be able to provide accommodation, welfare and other support
- Make welfare arrangements for dependants overseas
- Meet Australia’s health and character requirements
Please note: If any member of an applicant's family unit has not turned 6, the applicant cannot be granted the visa unless there are compelling and compassionate reasons.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Student Guardian Visa holders are not allowed to work in Australia. That’s why Australia expects these visa holders to prove that they have enough money for the duration of their stay to cover costs and expenses.
Unfortunately, only one parent at a time can hold a Student Guardian Visa.
