The Subclass 186 visa is a permanent residence visa, which means it does not expire - it is valid indefinitely. However, the travel facility on the visa expires after five years. After this time, visa holders can apply for a Resident Return Visa or Australian citizenship to continue travelling to and from Australia.

Australian permanent residents can apply for citizenship after living in Australia for four years on a valid visa. Applicants must have been permanent residents for the 12 months preceding the application. It is also necessary to meet all the other requirements associated with a citizenship application for Australia.

As permanent residents, Subclass 186 visa holders are eligible for Medicare, Australia’s public healthcare scheme.

Subclass 186 visa applicants can apply while offshore or onshore. Those applicants who apply while in Australia must hold a substantive visa or a related bridging visa A, B or C.
