WHAT THIS VISA ALLOWS:

Dependent Child Student Visa holders can:

  • Join their parent in New Zealand
  • Study at a primary or secondary school 
  • Be treated as a domestic student, meaning the parent doesn’t have to pay tuition fees for them to go to school.

To apply for a Dependent Child Student Visa for a child, parents must:

  • Submit proof that confirms they’re the child’s parent
  • Hold an eligible work or student visa
  • Earn at least NZD43,322.76 a year before tax if they hold an Essentials Skills Work Visa or a Religious Worker Visa
  • Have enough money to support their child while they’re in New Zealand, which is NZD15,000 for a full year of study or NZD1,250 per month that the child will be in New Zealand
  • Have the funds available for the child to leave New Zealand at the end of their stay, if applicable 
  • Have the legal right to remove their child from their home country
  • Agree to pay their child’s health care costs if they’re not entitled to free health care

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

For the Child Dependent Student Visa, Immigration New Zealand classifies a dependent child as 17 or younger or 18 or 19 with no children of their own and financially reliant on their parent or their parent’s partner

The following Student Visa holders can support their child for a student visa:

  • Parents in New Zealand to study under an exchange programme approved by the New Zealand Government
  • Foreign students enrolled in any Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme at a New Zealand university
  • Persons who hold a New Zealand scholarship administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. 

Children of Student Visa holders who do not meet the above requirements must apply for a study visa in their own right.
