WHAT THIS VISA ALLOWS:

Partner of a Student Visitor Visa holders can:

  • Join their partner in New Zealand for the duration of their studies
  • Explore New Zealand as a visitor
  • Study for up to three months

THE REQUIREMENTS:

To apply for a Partner of a Student Visitor Visa, candidates must:

  • Have a partner that holds a New Zealand Student Visa, and:
    • The partner must be eligible to support the visa application
    • The partners must be legally married or in a civil union or de facto relationship and live together in a genuine and stable relationship
  • Have enough money to live on while in New Zealand or have an eligible sponsor
  • Have a ticket to leave New Zealand at the end of their stay or have an eligible sponsor to cover the cost of the onward journey
  • Meet New Zealand’s health and character requirements

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP REQUIREMENTS:

Partner of a Student Visitor Visa applicants and their partners must prove to Immigration New Zealand that they’re living together in a genuine and stable relationship. 

Immigration New Zealand wants to see evidence of the following:

  • How long the partners have been together
  • How long the partners have lived together
  • That the partners share financial and other responsibilities
  • That the partners spend time together, which the partners can prove through photos, emails and social media conversations
  • That other people recognise the relationship
  • Anything else the couple thinks proves the status of their relationship

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Partner of a Student Visitor Visa holders must have enough money to live on while in New Zealand.

Immigration New Zealand stipulates that the amount required is at least NZD1,000 per month or NZD400 per month if the applicant has already paid for accommodation.

INZ will accept all of the following as evidence:

  • Proof of accommodation pre-payment
  • Bank statements
  • Credit card statements
  • Bank drafts
  • Traveller's cheques
  • a ‘Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry’ completed by an eligible sponsor 

The only exception to this requirement is visa applicants whose student partners hold a scholarship that guarantees maintenance and accommodation to the student's family. 

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Partner of a Student Visitor Visa holders cannot work in New Zealand. However, visa holders can study for up to three months during their stay.

Partner of a Student Visitor Visa applicants can include their dependent children in their application. The children must meet the visa’s requirements, and the applicant must prove their relationship with them.
