AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT

People who were born overseas to a parent or parents who were Australian citizens at the time of the birth are eligible for Australian citizenship by descent.

THE REQUIREMENTS:

To apply for Australian citizenship by descent, candidates must:

  • Have been born outside Australia
  • Have a parent or parents who were Australian citizens at the time of their birth
  • Be of ‘good character’ if they’re 18 or older

It is possible to get Australian citizenship by descent, as described on this page, or by naturalisation. Getting citizenship by naturalisation means applying for citizenship as a permanent resident of Australia or as an eligible New Zealand citizen.

Australia does allow dual citizenship, so someone who becomes an Australian citizen can remain a citizen of another country.
