People who were born overseas to a parent or parents who were Australian citizens at the time of the birth are eligible for Australian citizenship by descent.

THE REQUIREMENTS:

To apply for Australian citizenship by descent, candidates must:

  • Have been born outside Australia
  • Have a parent or parents who were Australian citizens at the time of their birth
  • Be of ‘good character’ if they’re 18 or older

Getting citizenship by naturalisation means applying for citizenship as a permanent resident of Australia or as an eligible New Zealand citizen.

Australia does allow dual citizenship, so someone who becomes an Australian citizen can remain a citizen of another country.
