The South African Visitor Visa (Section 11(1)) allows foreign nationals to visit South Africa for tourism, family visits, short business meetings, or conferences for up to 90 days, depending on nationality. Citizens of certain countries are exempt from the visa requirement for 30 or 90 days. Extensions of up to a further 90 days can be applied for from within South Africa, provided the application is submitted at least 60 days before the current visa expires.
Eligibility
- 01
Genuine temporary visitor intent supported by evidence of home-country ties
The visitor visa requires the applicant to demonstrate genuine intent to visit South Africa temporarily and to return home. Evidence of employment, family, property, and financial obligations in the home country all support the temporary-stay assessment by the Department of Home Affairs.
- 02
Sufficient funds for the stay and return travel
Applicants must demonstrate they can support themselves financially for the duration of the visit. The Department looks for evidence of available funds to cover accommodation, living expenses, and return travel; a return ticket is required or funds to purchase one must be shown.
- 03
Valid passport with sufficient validity beyond the intended stay
The applicant's passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond the intended departure date from South Africa. Passports with fewer than six months of validity are routinely flagged, and some missions require six months of validity before they will process the application.
- 04
Extension must be applied for at least 60 days before current visa expiry
Applicants already in South Africa who wish to extend must submit the extension application at least 60 days before the current visa expires, or within seven days of entry if the intended stay is less than 30 days. Late applications are refused without consideration of merits.
- 05
Health and character requirements met
Standard character requirements apply; prior immigration violations and serious criminal convictions must be disclosed. Medical examinations are not routinely required for short-stay visitor visas but may be requested in specific cases.
- 06
No intention to work, study, or conduct business activities
The visitor visa does not permit employment, business activities that generate South African income, or study courses longer than 90 days. Attending short conferences or courtesy business meetings is generally permitted; conducting operational or commercial activity is not.
Mistakes that cost a refusal
-
Submitting incomplete application forms or missing required documents; the Department of Home Affairs does not accept incomplete applications and will return them without processing.
-
Applying for an extension too close to the visa expiry date; extensions must be applied for at least 60 days before expiry, and late applications are refused regardless of the reason for the delay.
-
Failing to demonstrate sufficient financial means; stating an amount without bank statements or other verifiable evidence is not accepted.
-
Assuming a prior approval guarantees a new approval; each application is assessed on its own merits at the time it is made, and changed circumstances or visa history can affect the outcome.
-
Overstating or understating the purpose of the visit; the stated purpose must match the supporting documentation, and inconsistencies between the application and the supporting documents are treated as credibility issues.

What that buys you
-
Immigration advisers confirm whether a visa is required based on the applicant's nationality and confirm the correct application channel before any documents are compiled.
-
Financial evidence review: advisers confirm that the evidence is in an acceptable format and meets the benchmark for the duration of the stay before lodgement.
-
Extension timeline management: advisers track the 60-day extension deadline and ensure applications are submitted well in advance, preventing a refusal on procedural grounds.
-
Prior refusal management: applicants with prior South African visa refusals or overstays face heightened scrutiny; advisers assess the impact on the new application and advise on how to address it.

What Is a South African Visitor Visa?
The South African Visitor Visa, formally a Section 11(1) Visa, permits entry for tourism, family visits, short business trips, and attendance at conferences or meetings. It does not permit employment, income-generating business activity, or study courses lasting more than 90 days. Applications must be submitted at a South African mission in the applicant's country of legal residence before travel; applications cannot be lodged at the border or on arrival.
Extensions
Applicants already in South Africa may apply to extend a visitor visa for up to a further 90 days, provided the extension application is submitted at least 60 days before the current visa expires. For stays of less than 30 days, the application must be submitted within seven days of entry. Extensions are not automatic: the same financial and purpose-of-visit evidence required for the original application must be supplied again. Late applications are refused outright regardless of the reason for the delay, and the stated purpose of the visit must be consistent with the original application.

Most visitor visas are granted for up to 90 days, depending on nationality and purpose. Citizens of certain countries are exempt from visa requirements for 30 or 90 days. Extensions can be granted for up to 90 additional days in defined circumstances, but extensions are not automatic and must be applied for before the original visa expires.
-
Can I apply for a visitor visa extension while already in South Africa?
Yes, provided you apply at least 60 days before your current visa expires. Extensions are submitted to a Department of Home Affairs office in South Africa. Extensions are not guaranteed and require the same financial and purpose-of-visit evidence as the original application. Late applications are refused outright.
-
Does a visitor visa allow any business activities in South Africa?
